Mastering the 4 Cs of Grading
Condition is the single most important factor in determining the value of a philatelic collection, often outweighing the rarity of the design itself.
Centering and Margins
- Perfect centering ensures that the design is balanced and visually appealing to the viewer.
- Generous margins are required for stamps to fit properly in standard album mounts without obstruction.
- Asymmetric centering can significantly reduce the grade from a Gem to a Fine or Very Fine.
Gum and Hinge Marks
- Mint stamps should have original gum that is free from discoloration or foxing.
- Hinge remnants can easily damage the gum and lower the overall grade of the item.
- Never attempt to remove a hinge from a valuable stamp unless you are a trained professional.
By strictly adhering to these grading standards, collectors can make informed decisions when buying or selling their inventory.
